Mopping up operations underway after fire at the Laborie Wine Estate

Mopping up operations are underway at a private wine estate in Paarl in the Boland following a fire that gutted a few structures inside the premises of the colonial building at the Laborie Wine Estate.

The ground crews that fought the blaze on Saturday are back on the scene to prevent the flare-ups from spreading.

Emergency Services also reportedly evacuated guests and visitors as a precaution.

The Drakenstein Municipality in Paarl, in the Boland, is continuing with clean-up operations at Laborie Estate following Saturday’s fire.

The blaze destroyed the Gucina Di Giovanni restaurant and the first wing of the accommodation facilities.

Authorities say the Manor House and the second accommodation area were, however, successfully protected.

“Crews remain on site and are actively monitoring hotspots to ensure that the area remains safe. The fire broke out shortly after midday on saturday. the cause of the fire is still unknown, and a full investigation will begin once mop up operations are complete, ” says Zulfa Petersen, Drakenstein Municipality Spokesperson.

It’s believed that strong winds led to the structural damage and posed challenges.

Property owners were not available for comment and have barred the media from gaining access.
