Mogalakwena Municipality Speaker removed through no confidence motion

African National Congress (ANC) councillors in the Mogalakwena Municipality in Mokopane in Limpopo have removed another party’s councillor through a motion of no confidence.

Pheladi Oliphant was removed as Speaker during a special council meeting held on Wednesday.

The council appointed Josephine Modiba as interim speaker until another council is convened to elect a new Speaker.

Oliphant refused to resign after she was requested to do so.

Other ANC councillors submitted a motion of no confidence against her.

In a report submitted to the council, the motion against Oliphant was based on allegations that she misused municipal vehicles.

This is not the first time that ANC councillors removed their fellow councillors through a motion of no confidence.

Ten years ago, some ANC councillors colluded with the opposition and removed their fellow councillor as mayor.
