African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu has described the late Women’s League Deputy President, Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe as a remarkable leader who will be remembered for her commitment to gender equality, peace and unity.

Bhengu is amongst the ANC leadership visiting the home of Mnganga-Gcabashe who died at the weekend after a short illness at her home in Westville in Durban.

Mnganga-Gcabashe has also served as the provincial chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in KwaZulu-Natal and chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises and most recently as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism.

Her election as the deputy president of the ANC Women’s League came in 2023.

“Here we are talking about someone who really, really worked hard to be recognized for her commitment to service, her commitment to gender equality and peace. One of the peacemakers of our time. I must also indicate that of course she was the Deputy President of the ANC’s Women’s League. There was a significant moment in the history of the Women’s League at the last conference where she was elected Deputy President, which we phrase as a beachhead moment simply because it marked the revival of the ANCWL,” Bhengu elaborates.

Meanwhile, the convenor of ANC provincial task team in KwaZulu-Natal, Mike Mabuyakhulu has hailed Mnganga-Gcabashe as a leader who served with diligence.

“Particularly during times of difficulty and violence in our province. As a senior leader representing us in eThekwini, her deployment in the Human Settlements Department showcased her dedication and commitment to our people.”
