Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson and Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has expressed concern over the security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This follows the deaths of nine South African soldiers in a battle between regional troops and M23 rebels in Goma on Friday.
In a statement, Mnangagwa condemned the attacks on United Nations (UN) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeepers and affirmed the regional body’s commitment to addressing the worsening security crisis in the area.
He said, “The regional organisation will assume its responsibility and take action on the deteriorating situation in the eastern DRC.”
The M23 rebels have taken control of Goma, forcing many residents to flee their homes.
Mnangagwa extended his condolences to the families of the peacekeepers and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
