MKP says Didiza is considering Ramaphosa motion of no confidence

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) says the office of National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has confirmed receipt of their request for a motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Didiza is said to be considering the request as this is latest submission but not the first.

Since 2019, there have been numerous calls by political parties for Ramaphosa to resign. Reasons cited for this range from the Phala Phala saga, to the country’s battle with load shedding.

On Wednesday, the MKP formalised its lack of confidence in the President, by submitting a motion to Didiza.

MKP Chief Whip Colleen Makhubele gave reasons for this motion.

“Given the issues that the President has been facing from the beginning of the sixth term right through to the seventh term it only makes sense to bring this motion forward. He is facing allegations of interference, failure of accountability, including his own Phala Phala. Now we’ve got allegations of corruption that are linked to him and we’ve got failures in his administration to provide even the simplest of basic services to the people. The citizens have lost confidence in our President and so have we.”

The MKP also cites economic mismanagement and national security concerns on its submission.

In 2020, and again in 2022, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) also called for a vote of no confidence against Ramaphosa.

However, the then National Assembly Speakers Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Thandi Modise did not agree to a secret ballot, as requested by the ATM, following a series of court and Parliamentary proceedings, those motions eventually lapsed.

MKP has now also formally requested for a secret ballot vote. Saying this would protect MPs against intimidation.

It also cites a 2017 Constitutional Court judgment, which says MPs should be allowed by the Speaker, to vote according to their conscience.

According to National Assembly rules, the Speaker must schedule a motion for debate and voting, within a reasonable period of time.

MKP is calling for the convening of an urgent debate within the next two weeks.
