Mkhwanazi orders removal of SAPS involved in Matric dance viral video

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered that all police officers involved in driving a colleague’s child to a matric dance in Estcourt in a police vehicle be removed from duty pending a disciplinary investigation.

A video of the child being transported went viral on social media.

The officers in the vehicle were on duty at the time.

The district commissioner has been ordered to take urgent disciplinary steps.

Police Spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says Mkhwanazi also ordered that the cost of fuel, running costs and state time of the trip be calculated, for the officers to reimburse the state.

“We cannot afford to have police officers who report for duty, but use state resources for their personal gain. I have further instructed our finance and supply chain management officers to determine the financial loss that the state could have suffered by that unauthorised activity. State petrol, state time and running cost of that vehicle should be claimed from those members. Communities always complain that when they call police stations they are told that there are no vans, whilst police officers are galavanting with state resources that are meant to serve the communities”, said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.
