Mkhwanazi admits to receiving ‘gratification’ from Matlala

Suspended Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi has admitted to the Madlanga Commission that he received varying amounts of money from Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Mkhwanazi says the money he received from Matlala was for food, petrol and assistance for one of his siblings’ funeral.

Evidence leader, Sello Mahlape has argued that the money given to Mkhwanazi by Matlala was made in gratification.

She argues that this was for Mkhwanazi’s efforts to facilitate the registration of Matlala’s vehicles under the City of Ekurhuleni and subsequently fitting them with blue lights.

Evidence leader: “On the basis of all that I seek to persuade the Commissioners that this is in part gratification. I am not even suggesting that this is the totality but at least we know that in the letter of intention to commit Mr Matlala had started making significant payments to you.”

Mkhwanazi: “No it’s not that. He even promised me far more than that. Even now when there was nothing that was happening, he said when I get this thing ngamla you will retire and you will find another business. And I was very happy.”
