The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) is calling on the government to cease its participation in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
The party is of the view that the group has done nothing to deconstruct colonial legacies; instead, it exists to aid the British Crown’s global influence.
Currently, South Africa is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, having rejoined in 1994 after initially withdrawing in 1961 due to international pressure and criticism of the country’s then apartheid policies.
KwaZulu-Natal MK Party MPL, Ishana Barciela says the party is clear and aligns itself to Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS), and has nothing to do with the Commonwealth Association or the Commonwealth.
“We see the West as now a crumbling global power. We want to lead our people to a system where land will be restored to them and where the restitution of ill-gotten loot will take place. India, for example, is claiming its rightful ownership of diamonds and other minerals that were taken away,” says Barciela.
