MK Party threatens legal action over KZN legislature suspensions

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) is threatening legal action against Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce over the suspension of its members.

Boyce suspended 36 Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) over the violent disruption of the sitting on December 15.

There are 35 suspended MPLs from the MKP and one from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Boyce accused the members of the legislature of having conducted a deliberate coordinated assault on the dignity of the House.

The suspended members have been barred from five sittings from the 12th of January next year.

Whip of the MKP caucus, Siphiwe Moyo-Mbatha, is part of the suspended group of MPLs.

He has labelled Boyce’s decision as unlawful and politically dangerous.

“There’s no procedural fairness. She just decided to suspend members of Umkhonto WeSizwe Party. Therefore, we take these letters as a joke. We are consulting with our legal team because we strongly feel the speaker is abusing the powers and privileges that she has as the speaker.”
