The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party maintains that it should be the governing party in South Africa following the May 29th general elections.
MK Party organiser Joe Ndlela spoke to SABC News ahead of the official programme of its 1st anniversary celebrations at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Despite securing over 45% of the vote in KwaZulu-Natal at the polls in May, the party did not secure an outright majority.
Thousands of MK party supporters are attending today’s rally.
Leader Jacob Zuma will deliver the official address.
Ndlela says today is a moment for the party to celebrate and to reflect.
“We were really not given a chance to achieve what we have achieved but as cadres of this glorious party, we knew that we could pull it and I think the whole country is fully aware that we challenged the elections and we still stand by that that we could be the government of the day, we stand by that. We celebrate and reflect on where we come from and where we’re heading.”
Ndlela also provided an update on the statement from the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), regarding trains that it had allegedly agreed to hire out to the MK Party to transport members and supporters to the stadium.
