The uMkhonto Wesizwe Party has repeated its call to provide the Members of Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee in Cape Town with security, saying they are dealing with sensitive matters involving highly resourceful and well-connected individuals.
The call follows an alleged kidnapping incident involving the party’s member, Vusi Shongwe.
Shongwe is an alternative member, serving on the Ad Hoc Committee looking into concerns around national security based on allegations by KwaZulu-Natal top cop, Lt-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The committee held its meetings at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility in Pretoria this week, to interview Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is incarcerated there.

The party says Shongwe was kidnapped on Wednesday evening in Thembisa and was forced to pay a ransom before being released. He was robbed of his three cellphones and was made to pay a substantial amount of money.
“I can confirm that Honorable Shongwe was indeed hijacked and kidnapped in effect from 10 in the evening until about 3 am. His devices were taken from him and obviously some cash. He was made to obviously pay to these kidnappers. But he’s fine, obviously a bit shaken. And the problem that we have is that if these kind of things can happen to members of an ad hoc committee who are parliamentarians, can you imagine what South Africans are having to deal with on a daily basis,” says MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela .
Parliament’s spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, says he is not aware of any correspondence from MKP in relation to the safety of MPs serving on the Ad Hoc Committee.
MKP Chief Whip Colleen Makhubele said she has written to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, to inform her about Shongwe’s kidnapping.
MKP is calling on Didiza to make known what measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of members of the Ad Hoc Committee. The party confirmed that a case has been opened at the Thembisa Police Station.
