The uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s Chief Whip Mzwanele Manyi strongly opposes Parliament’s approval of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s salary increase.

African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli tabled a motion in response to the recommendation of the Independent Commission on Public Remuneration in May.

The Commission had recommended a 3% annual increase for the 2023-24 financial year and a 2.5 % increase for 2024-25 for all office bearers, including Ramaphosa.

According to the ANC, Ramaphosa has not received a salary increase since becoming President in 2018.

MK Party Chief Whip, Mzwanele Manyi says, “We have a President who we are made to believe is multi-billionaire. I’m not even talking about an increase, why even need a salary? Why would a multi-billionaire need a salary in the first instance? The second thing is a moral issue.”

“Public servants are the backbone of service delivery, they’ve been denied salary increases for the past four years. Any head of state with any semblance of morality or altruism is his body, why would a person like that, as a multi-billionaire say I want an increase,” adds Manyi.
