MK Party not giving up on plans to topple KZN coalition government

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party says it is not giving up on its campaign to topple the KwaZulu-Natal coalition government.

In December 2025, the party was unsuccessful in its attempt to remove Premier Thami Ntuli through a motion of no confidence.

MK Party leaders are currently in talks with other parties in a second attempt to collapse the coalition, whilst it prepares for its first local government election campaign.

Provincial Chairperson, Willies Mchunu, says they are making headway.

“The vote of confidence that was started, it’s just one aspect of an organisational process that is giving a clear indication of where the party stands. The party stands at a position where we are seeing we are not accepting that we are outside of government with 45% and that to us is ignoring 45% of the votes of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Speaking on contesting the by-elections, the MK Party has won four wards in the by-elections in the province. Mchunu says contesting by-elections was to allow the party to assess its support on the ground.

“When it comes to local government elections which is now by-elections, we know how much support we have in areas where the elections have taken place. We’ve also looked at our own strength, we’ve looked at our own weaknesses, and we are correcting them and learning from those weaknesses in preparation for the local government elections.”
