MK Party focused on policy work, not publicity: Shivambu

uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu says the party’s parliamentary representatives are contributing meaningfully to policy discussions, but acknowledges that more support is needed to enhance their effectiveness.

In an interview with SABC News Political Editor Mzwandile Mbeje, Shivambu dismissed claims that the party’s presence in Parliament is minimal, arguing that, unlike other opposition parties, the MK Party does not focus on gaining attention but instead prioritises service to the public.

Shivambu says, “If you pay close attention, you’ll realize that there is a lot of work that is being done. And there’s a lot of policy positions and propositions that we got from our representatives, which get to be submitted in the Steering Committee on Finance, in the Defence Portfolio Committee, and a variety of other interventions as well as to just what should happen.”

He adds, “And one other thing which South Africa should appreciate is that Mkondo Esezo is not a Democratic Alliance, Mkondo Esezo is not the Economic Freedom Fighters, Mkondo Esezo is its own party, and does not play to the gallery for just attention on social media. We do our work and we know what really matters to the people.”

Shivambu’s comments come amid criticism that the MK Party has not been vocal in parliamentary debates despite its official opposition status.
