Mixed fortunes for Blitz Boks in Hong Kong

The South African men’s Sevens team had mixed fortunes on the opening day of the Hong Kong leg of World Rugby’s Sevens series.

The Blitz Boks easily negotiated their opening encounter against Uruguay, but then Australia beat them 26-7 in their second Pool B game.

The first game against Uruguay was a potential obstacle for the Blitz Boks as the South Americans have proven themselves recently against the likes of Fiji and New Zealand.

However, the Blitz Boks did their homework and had too much speed and skill on the outside and won 40 points to 7.

The South Africans scored six tries in the end while keeping their unpredictable and dangerous opponents down to just one try.

In the 2nd game, Australia got their noses in front early in the game, thanks to slick handling. The Aussies continued to torment the South African defence in the 1st half and took a 14-0 lead into the break.

The Blitz Boks had no answer to the Wallabies’ speed, and the 2nd half followed the same pattern as the first. The Blitz Boks take on New Zealand in their final pool game early on Saturday, one they need to win to keep alive their hopes of advancing to the Cup quarterfinals.
