The organisation has been working on a critical strategy and a study into 11 minerals.

A critical minerals strategy is aimed to position South Africa as a leading producer that supports the green economy.
Motuku says: “We need to understand the challenges facing the mining sector and this study is important for us to understand those challenges, but most importantly, to understand opportunities to attract investment into the country. This study we believe will unlock those opportunities for us and will be able to sell the country to say this is where the opportunities are, but also the expertise that reside in the country, the competencies and capabilities, not only within Mintek, but also within the academia, but also the industry itself. It’s a major contributor in that space.”
Meanwhile, Minister of Minerals and Petroleum Gwede Mantashe echoed the sentiment that South Africa is positioning itself as a leading producer of minerals that supports the green economy.
