Minister Kubayi stresses need to protect NPA, rule of law in SA

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says it is important that all South Africans protect institutions that uphold the rule of law, especially the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Kubayi on Sunday opened a case of fraud, impersonation and defeating the ends of justice. This follows a weekend newspaper report that she, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni and President Cyril Ramaphosa were working with the NPA to have Deputy President Paul Mashatile prosecuted.

Speaking outside the Brooklyn Police Station, east of Pretoria, Kubayi says, “I’ve done this because it’s important to protect institutions that are of democracy, but also that are implementing our justice system. One of the critical institutions that must be protected is the NPA.”

“We have seen previously how the issues of state capture have compromised our institutions to the point where they’re also about to collapse. So we are one of those that have committed that we rebuild our institutions, but we allow them function without fear or favour, so that’s why it’s important for me to open this case because I cannot allow where in the public domain that these institutions are compromised to point where they can’t do their job.”
