Minister Kubayi calls for action over UN’s Francesca Albanese debacle

The Justice and Constitutional Development Department says Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has instructed that action be taken to rectify the matter related to the UN’s Francesca Albanese.

This is after a South African sheriff served her with papers linked to a US lawsuit by pro-Israeli groups – prompting an apology from Minister Kubayi.

The world body’s Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories delivered the 23rd Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The sheriff’s incident is linked to the lawsuit by pro-Israel groups – Christian Friends of Israeli Communities and Christians for Israel USA.

“The Minister has since instructed that this irregular service be withdrawn, so that’s the first step. The second step resides around consequence management that the minister has instructed the acting DG to effect. So, the two actions, the withdrawal and the consequence management, will assist in addressing the matter. The Special Rapporteur, nothing will happen to them, given the instruction that the minister has given,” says the department’s spokesperson, Terrence Manase.

Minister Kubayi has also given the assurance that nothing will happen to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories during her visit to South Africa. Albanese is part of a discussion in Cape Town on Palestine and the ongoing crisis of international law.

Minister Kubayi’s assurance comes after a South African Sheriff served her with papers linked to a US lawsuit by pro-Israeli groups, prompting an apology from Minister Kubayi.

Speaking at the Annual Nelson Mandela Lecture, which she delivered in Johannesburg on Saturday, Albanese said she did not want to comment on her personal issues.

“I really beg you to understand that for the past two years, I’ve taken on and I’ve made enormous sacrifices, personal sacrifices, to keep me, my personal issues, my personal drama aside – and I’m here to speak about Palestine. I’m here as a special Rapporteur of the United Nations on the Occupied Palestinian Territories- and I would very much appreciate it if you ask me questions related to this, and on the rest, I have no comment,” said Albanese.
