Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube will officially announce the outcome of the 2024 matric exams on Monday amid hopes of a continued improvement in the national pass rate. The ceremony will be held at the Mosaiek Church in Johannesburg.

More than 900,000 matric learners sat for their National Senior Certificate exams, comprising full-time and part-time learners from all nine provinces in 2024.

The release of the results comes after a court battle between the Department of Education, the Information Regulator and AfriForum over the public release of results in newspapers.

The Information Regulator launched an urgent interdict application to stop the Department of Basic Education from publishing the results in newspapers. However, the matter was struck off the roll.

“The present matter of publication has been followed for at least three consecutive years. Why should this year be treated differently? I, therefore, conclude that the matter is not urgent and should be struck off the roll. I make the following order, the matter is struck off the roll due to lack of urgency,” Judge Ronel Tolmay ruled.

Competition among provinces

Provinces across the country are eagerly waiting for the results after 2023 saw a great improvement in performance. The class of 2023 achieved the highest matric pass rate since the dawn of democracy in South Africa with an 82.9% pass rate.

The Free State remains the province to beat.

The province had the highest pass rate of 89% in 2023 and it has remained in the top three performing provinces for five years.

Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal are also strong contenders.

Meanwhile, there has an appeal to matric learners who do not make it in their 2024 matric results not lose hope as there is a second chance programme run by the department.
