The Ndabakazi intersection was notorious for numerous fatal crashes.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has officially opened the billion rand Intermodal Interchange Project – including a taxi rank at Ndabakazi outside Butterworth, in Eastern Cape.
The Ndabakazi intersection was a notorious interchange and the scene of numerous fatal crashes over the years.
Creecy says the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) is managing a number of road projects in the Eastern Cape.
“We’ve taken over four thousand kilometres of roads from the provincial government at their request, and the reason we’ve done that is that we understand that this province has a backlog with building of infrastructure. We understand that MEC Nqatha [Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Xolile Nqatha] has a difficult job; he only has so much money available and there is a pot of historical work that is required.
“And also we faced with situation in this province where the infrastructure has been battered by extreme weather events over the last two years. I think what we are trying to do is to support the province. The EC is the area where Sanral is spending the biggest percentage of its budget,” adds Creecy.
The interchange links the R409 with the N2 and the new design is set to make it a much safer junction between the two roads. Nomzwanele Mngoma has more.
