Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane and other stakeholders
Higher Education and Training Minister Dr. Nobuhle Nkabane has apologised to the students of Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in the Eastern Cape, as well as the family of the student who was allegedly shot and killed during unrest at the institution yesterday morning.
This after the university issued a statement saying that the deceased was not a registered student nor a staff member at the university.
Nkabane visited the Nelson Mandela Drive campus this evening and later visited another student who was shot and injured last month during a protest in WSU.

She will also visit the family of the 24-year-old deceased student in his hometown of Matatiele.
Nkabane elaborates, “One is not going to argue on those technicalities but what I know and what I saw from the records from NSFAS as the department we have been paying for the student last year till the end of the year. And this year I saw through the communication that we had with the students that he is indeed registered. I can affirm that he is a student at Walter Sisulu University.”
The clinical manager at the hospital, Mphumzi Mdledle has confirmed the passing of the student at the hospital, saying he arrived with multiple gunshot wounds.
“Yesterday we received about three students in the morning. Unfortunately, one was extremely critical and at the time of presentation there wasn’t much our medical teams could do. They tried to rescuciutate him but that all failed. Due to the nature of the injuries he sustained, he couldn’t have make it. It was a multiple gunshot. One had just minimal injuries so was then referred to our sister hospital. One was treated quite well yesterday and was discharged yesterday.”
