Minimally invasive heart surgery boosts recovery

Many heart disease patients now have access to minimally invasive surgery.

The procedure, which is performed at various hospitals in South Africa, has significantly reduced recovery time for patients.

Cardiologist Dr. Vinod Thomas explains additional benefits of this advancement.

“The arrhythmia that’s very common is called Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), and around 2 to 3 million people suffer from this. It affects the quality of life and prognosis of the patient. In the past, we used to use medication to get the patient back to normal rhythm. That works fairly well but some patients had complications from the medication, did not tolerate it, or did not respond to it. This new technology is superior to medical therapy. It gets the patients back to a normal rhythm and improves their quality of life.”
