Mhlauli leads relief efforts for flood-hit Saldanha residents

Deputy Minister in the Presidency Nonceba Mhlauli says they are assisting about 600 people who’ve been affected by the recent floods in Saldanha, on the West Coast.

Some shacks in the informal settlement of Middelpos were completely submerged during the week-long heavy rains.

Mhlauli visited the area with the humanitarian aid organisation Gift of the Givers, where they handed over blankets and food hampers to the people who had packed the community hall.

She says her visit to the area is part of the government’s coordinated response to the recent disasters affecting the area.

“We sent through the local counsellors last week, we had requested them working with the Gift of the Givers to be able to respond immediately to the help that we had requested, at the time it was about 600 people that were affected in this particular ward which is Middelpos, we were informed that the relief that was dispatched last week, there were about 200 that were not helped that’s why we are back today to assist those 200 people.”

People had packed the community hall.

Mhlauli has pleaded with officials to verify the list of the needy, as some keep coming back over and over again.

Community leader Arthur Nombewu says there’s still a huge need in this community. “We need urgency for the people who have moved from this place. I can tell you this is the beginning of winter, the rainy season in this place.”

Mhlauli has promised to come back to the area for the application of IDs for those who lost them and emergency kits for those who lost their shacks.
