Metrobus says commuters were made aware of new payment system

Johannesburg’s Metrobus says the newly introduced payment system will enable commuters to pay only for the distance they have travelled.

This is in reaction to the planned march by commuters to Metrobus offices in Braamfontein to protest against the system. Commuters say the new tap in and tap out payment system makes travelling expensive. Commuters are picketing at Ghandi Square in Johannesburg’s CBD, over the system that is expected to commence from tomorrow. They say they were not properly consulted but Metrobus spokesperson Tshepo Nathan disagrees.

“So, as we have always done with our commuters, we have always engaged, we have given ample notice. I think it was just over 30 days of notice as to what we will be doing going forward. We think that the same system that we’re introducing is a system that will ensure equity, that will ensure that people pay for the services that they actually consume so that we can improve the service that we give to our people. The old system was quite unfair, because it did not charge people for the distance that they have travelled. Now we are saying there needs to be equity among everybody that uses our services so that everybody pays for the services that they consume,” Nathan says.
