ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa
To win the 2026 Local Government Elections (LGE), ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa says that the party must field its most dedicated, honest and competent candidates.
Ramaphosa was speaking to over 1 600 delegates at the close of the ANC’s four-day National General Council (NGC).
He says that there is no alternative and members must go to the ground and conduct door-to-door campaigns.
“The door-to-door process does work from 1994 and throughout the various elections we were able to get high levels of support because we focused on door-to- door and we focused on our street sheets to report the extent to which our comrades were able to reach all our voters. Our network was rich it was good it was effective and we need to go back to that way of working.”
SACP/ANC election impasse
Meanwhile, until the South African Communist Party (SACP) and ANC have reached an agreement on the communist party’s decision to contest the 2026 Local Government Elections alone – its members must recuse themselves from ANC discussions on strategy and tactics ahead of the polls.
This is one of the decisions taken by the ANC’s NGC.
The ANC has been concerned about the SACP’s decision as many of its members have dual membership of both parties with implications on which party to vote and campaign for.
“All we are saying is that as we continue to engage particularly on our strategies and tactics for running the elections, they should recuse themselves and may I add that a number of them themselves feel that they will be conflicted and they are recusing themselves until we solve this problem and I have confidence that we will solve it.”
