A road with potholes
The Manyatseng Taxi Association has expressed disappointment that construction work on the R708 between Clocolan and Marquard has not started despite an announcement by the MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport Jabu Mbalula that a contractor was appointed and commencing work, a week ago.
A protest two weeks ago by locals, businesses, farmers and taxi operators about the poor state of the road spurred the Free State government to act.
“Mr Mbalula has promised us that the road is going to be fixed. He said that the road is going to be patched and it will be viable to us. We were happy to meet with him but we can see that it was just for fun. The road not being done is not good for us,” says Chairperson of the Manyatseng Taxi Association, Seabata Nkatane.
Nkatane says the roads still have potholes that get progressively worse.
“They are using soil or gravel or whatever and after the rain everything is spoiled. It’s useless for them to say there’s a contractor that is working here, they are just misusing the funds,” he adds.
