Police Minister Senzo Mchunu
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has raised concerns about an emerging trend of police officers allegedly colluding with private sector individuals to commit crimes.
This statement comes amid concerns raised earlier this year by the Institute for Security Studies, which indicated that police corruption is eroding public trust.
Responding to questions in the National Assembly, Mchunu affirmed that the government is addressing corruption within the police force, which he described as “rotten apples.”
He says, “Each time we come across any allegation of collusion on any matter, whether it is with the private sector or the public sector, we institute disciplinary action and in some cases we suspend.”
Mchunu added that multiple disciplinary processes are currently under way, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach.
“There are many such processes that are going on. We are intolerant of that completely 100 percent and therefore there is no question of us being stopped. There is nothing that can stop us from actually dealing with collusion. Whatever we come across, we do deal with it.”
