Mchunu hands over his electronic devices to authorities

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has handed over his electronic devices to authorities. Mchunu, who is on a leave of absence has been accused of corruption, having ties to criminal syndicates and meddling in police investigations.

The devices include a state-issued laptop, a personal tablet, two unused old cellphones in his possession and one active cellphone that he currently uses.

This takes place as Mchunu is embroiled in allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.

In a statement on Friday, Mchunu has maintained that he has nothing to hide and welcomes any lawful investigation aimed at clarifying facts and upholding the integrity of public office.

He adds that he remains confident that due process will confirm that “his actions have been ethical, lawful, and consistent with his duties as a member of the Executive”.

KwaZulu-Natal National Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made the accusations at a media briefing this year.

Mchunu has denied any wrongdoing.

Last month, Mchunu appeared before Parliament’s ad hoc Committee, which is investigating Mkhwanazi’s allegations.

Mchunu said he would of that taken the same decision to disband the Political Killing Task Team but he would have approached it differently. He said a decision would have needed to be taken purely based on how funds were used.
