Police Minister Senzo Mchunu testifying before the Madlanga Commission, 05 Dec 2025.
Questions have been raised about why Police Minister Senzo Mchunu disbanded the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), and not other task teams that exist in the Western Cape or KwaZulu-Natal.
Evidence before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry suggests that those task teams in both provinces have existed for at least seven years.
Mchunu has testified at the commission that the PKTT was meant to operate for only six months and not six years.
Mchunu has defended his decision, stating that the task teams in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal serve to reinforce specialised units.
“The PKTT issues are different from these in the sense that this one flows from organisational structure studies to say we have this kind of team; the intention was this and this and this. That could’ve been determined by the existence of newly established specialised units, which is not what applies in the Western Cape,” says Mchunu.
