Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga chairing the Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System in Pretoria on September 22, 2025.
The home address of murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe was forwarded to Hawks members by retired Head General Godfrey Lebeya.
This is according to the witness testimony of Lieutenant-General Patrick Mbotho who is the Hawks Divisional Commissioner.
General Mbotho is appearing before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria. He told the commission that he in turn forwarded the message to the Hawk’s Tactical Response Head Brigadier Lesiba Mokoena.
Mbotho is testifying about the events leading up to Molefe’s arrest in December 2024, when Hawks members were dispatched to what they believed was a bogus SAPS operation at Molefe’s Sandhurst home in Johannesburg.
Mbotho’s evidence is being led by Advocate Lee Segeels-Ncube.
“After General Lebeya sends you the address, you send a message to him? Yes. Can you read that message for us and tell us why you sent it to him? I asked the question, any contact number when we get there, General? There I was asking if he’s got any contact person or a number that we can use so that the team, when they arrive there, because my problem was, I did not know whether when they would get there the gates would be closed.”
The Madlanga Commission has heard how Hawks Divisional Commissioner General Patrick Mbotho only found out during the Inquiry that officers dispatched to the residence of Katiso “KT” Molefe were not within the Johannesburg vicinity.
Mbotho has testified that he gave instructions to Hawks Tactical Operations Head Brigadier Lesiba Mokoena to use a vehicle within the Sandton vicinity to investigate the alleged bogus police operation.
But evidence before the Commission has revealed that police officers as far as Pretoria North were called to go inspect the operation at Molefe’s house.
“So, was your instruction to him that he must find a vehicle in Johannesburg to go to the address? Yes. Yeah, that was my instruction when I said I want the vehicle in the vicinity of, not necessarily in St. John, but in the greater Jo’burg. And maybe you’ll get to it later. When did you subsequently become aware that the people he sent to the address were not in Jo’burg, but came from Pretoria North and Mokhale City? During my interaction with the commission. With the commission, this commission? Yes. Yes,” General Mbotho elaborates.
