ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has praised Johannesburg councillors for what he calls their “thankless job” of delivering services on the ground.
Speaking at the party’s regional councillor report-back meeting in the south of Johannesburg, Mbalula said councillors remain the first point of call for communities and must remain visible in addressing people’s concerns.
“And I want to talk to the councillors of the movement as we do. Our councillors are doing a thankless job because the first point of call and criticism is the councillors. Our councillors are doing a thankless job. In reality, comrades, there are people who some of them since we deployed have never called a community meeting. You will never succeed, whether good or bad, you will never succeed if you don’t connect with the people,” says Mbalula.

Mbalula has defended President Cyril Ramaphosa’s remarks on municipal audits.
Earlier this week, Ramaphosa told councillors that municipalities run by the DA performed better in Auditor-General reports.
Mbalula said the president was not praising the DA but highlighting the audit findings.
