Mbalula acknowledges loss of wards to MK Party in KZN

The African National Congress (ANC) has expressed concern over its recent losses to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party in three wards during by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal.

Under the leadership of its newly-appointed Provincial Task Team, the ANC lost Ward 2 in Richmond, Ward 28 in KwaDukuza, and Ward 18 in Mandeni.

The party’s national leadership and the Provincial Task Team held a meeting yesterday to assess the progress of ongoing organisational renewal efforts in the province following its electoral defeat in 2024.

Speaking to the media in Durban after the meeting, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula acknowledged the setbacks.

“We have lost and we did not camouflage this loss here in KwaZulu-Natal. We are a 17% party and we need to get out of that,” Mbalula said.

He noted that while the ANC has launched a programme of renewal and recovery, there is still significant work to be done.

“Is it the end? Is it working up to this far? There are sparkles of good work that has been done. And I’m not over-defensive to say that no, we are winning and everything is hunky-dory — we are not concerned. We have lost the important wards of the ANC from members of the ANC who left the ANC, joining the opposition and won important wards.”

He also noted that despite the losses, the ANC has made progress in some areas as part of its renewal campaign.
