The Mayor of the Maruleng Local Municipality in Limpopo has sent condolences to the families of the two girls who drowned on Friday in the Molomahlapi River in Butswana village outside Tzaneen in Limpopo.
Nine-year-old Bonolo Dibakoane and eight-year-old Nothando Mphogo were last seen playing near the river.
Mayor Tsheko Musolwa has encouraged the public to exercise caution as rivers are swollen after the heavy rains.
The two girls who were neighbours were playing at the Molomahlapi river when they were swept away.
Emergency services and community members searched for them and their bodies were discovered on Friday night.
Mayor Musolwa has encouraged parents and guardians to ensure that children play in areas designated for recreation.
