Floyd Shivambu, President of Afrika Mayibuye Movement.
Afrika Mayibuye Movement leader Floyd Shivambu says the movement intends to “fill the gap” left by the African National Congress (ANC), arguing that the governing party has lost its moral and ideological compass.
This comes as members of the Afrika Mayibuye Movement wrapped up their inaugural national convention at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus. The party says delegates from all 54 districts attended as they adopted the founding documents, policies and commission reports.
Shivambu says the party is positioning itself as a new liberation movement centred on dignity, service and direct community action.
“There is no space for the ANC in the future, and we have to have a separate and different political movement with different values. I actually said that the value system that engulfs the ANC is a way too corrupt and there is no point of return. This is because even the young leaders of that organisation have been inducted into corruption.”
Shivambu says the party will seek to win an outright majority in next year’s local government elections. He says if there is no outright winner, the movement is open to constructive engagements to help form a stable government.
“Look, we are not postulating any coalition, we are going to contest elections to win outright. So that is our approach, that when we contest elections, we contest to win.”
