Matlala dropped names of top police officers during raid: Witness C

Witness C has told the Madlanga Commission how alleged cartel criminal syndicate member Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala dropped the names of prominent police officers he is close with when police descended at his home in December 2024.

They included the names of Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, Counter-intelligence Head Feroz Khan, Organised crime Head Richard Shibiri and KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss Lesetja Senona.

Witness C says he suspects this was a way of Matlala trying to intimidate them when they conducted a search and seizure operation at his home. He further adds that Matlala also dropped the name of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to the list of officers he knows.

“And furthermore, on that day, he indicated that he was in constant communication with the Police Minister, Mr. Senzo Mchunu, and on the very same night, he was supposed to have a meeting with Mr. Mchunu, and also indicated that there is a person who is responsible for his meeting with Mr. Mchunu, as he is not the one who arranged for the meeting.”

SAPS TENDER

Witness C has testified how Matlala indicated to him that a portion of the money from the South African Police Service (SAPS) tender went to  Sibiya.

However, he did not indicate to Witness C how Sibiya and Sesona assisted him in getting the tender.

Witness C says, “Commissioners, unfortunately, with regards to the way of securing the tender, he didn’t go deeper into it as to how they were of assistance to him. That he indicated is that after each and every payment by the SAPS, a portion of the payment goes to General Sibiya.”
