Matla power station explosion won’t result in load-shedding: Minister

Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says the explosion that took place on Thursday at Matla power station’s Unit Six will not result in any load-shedding.

Briefing the media at the power station in Mpumalanga, Minister Ramokgopa says while a preliminary assessment suggests the cause of the explosion to be a ruptured steam pipe, a root-cause analysis will be conducted to investigate the matter further.

The Minister reveals that of the nine employees who were injured in the incident, two have been released from hospital.

“Even with the kind of incident that we’re experiencing now. We have not been called upon to initiate any kind of load-shedding. That is important because it says the following, one is that the generation recovery plan is working. And two is that the team is beginning to generate significant headspace that makes it possible to absorb this kind of incident. Of course, once you lose a unit it means that there are additional constraints but the team has done exceptionally well in ensuring that overall we can absorb this.”
