Mashazi expected to conclude testifying at Madlanga Commission

Retired Ekurhuleni City Manager Dr Imogen Mashazi is expected to conclude her testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

She is facing tough questions over her alleged shielding of suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi, who allegedly has links to criminal suspect Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

On Monday, Mashazi accused suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Chief Jabulani Mapiyeye of using his position to take advantage of his subordinates.

Mashazi alleges that various cases of sexual harassment have been brought against Mapiyeye.

Meanwhile, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is set to appear before the commission in the afternoon.

Mchunu was placed on a leave of absence in July this year.

This followed KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegation that Mchunu unlawfully disbanded the Political Killings Task Team.

Critics allege that the aim of the disbandment was to obstruct investigations into powerful individuals.

Mchunu has denied this, saying he had briefed President Ramaphosa on his intention to disband the task team and he had supported the move.

Mchunu has already presented himself before the Ad Hoc Committee in parliament; he is expected to face tough cross-examination from evidence leaders at the Madlanga Commission.

Various witnesses have testified that he had no authority to disband the political killings task team.

The witnesses have further testified that the authority to dissolve the PKTT was the function of National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
