Mashatile attends reopened Luthuli inquest

ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile joined the family of the party’s former president, Chief Albert Luthuli, at the Pietermaritzburg High Court for the reopened inquest into his death.

The Luthuli family is seeking to overturn the findings of the original inquest, which concluded that Luthuli’s 1967 death was accidental. He was reportedly struck by a goods train in Groutville, KwaZulu-Natal.

For nearly six decades, both the African National Congress and the Luthuli family have maintained that he was not killed in an accident, but rather murdered by the apartheid regime.

At least three expert witnesses, including a senior pathologist who reviewed the original post-mortem report, are expected to testify this week. So far, 14 witnesses have been called in the reopened inquest.
