National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has urged police officers to defend themselves whenever their lives are under threat.
He was speaking after visiting the families of two police officers killed in the line of duty on Friday.
51-year-old Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa and 45-year-old Sergeant Simon Masenye were ambushed whilst transporting Jabulani Moyo from the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court to Boksburg prison.
The suspect shot the officers inside the vehicle. A pair of leg irons was discovered in the car. Moyo, who is believed to be a foreign national, is said to be armed and dangerous.
A R150 000 reward has been offered for information that can lead to his arrest.
Masemola says police must protect themselves.
“Indeed, we cannot remain silent and it cannot be business as usual when criminals have clearly declared war on SAPS. I am making this call again to all police officers in the country, do not die with the tools and resources that we have given you. Do not hesitate to protect yourself. Remember to always use force that is proportional to the threat.”
