National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola testifies before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, September 22, 2025.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola will face questions about his contradictions on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team when he returns to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday morning.
The task team was disbanded following an instruction from the embattled Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu.
Masemola, who started to testify on Monday, also said his deputy, General Shadrack Sibiya, and businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala were friends.
Matlala is an alleged criminal mastermind who is reported to have close ties with Mchunu.
This is what Masemola said about Sibiya and Matlala: “A concerned party requested a meeting with me and upon meeting … the person indicated that General Sibiya is known to be close friends with Mr Matlala. It was expressed that Cat Matlala was involved in various crimes and was suspected to be involved with the kidnapping of Mr Jerry Boshoga.”

Meanwhile, crime expert Thabang Bogopa says if Mchunu cared about the country, he would not have disbanded the task team.
“If he had the best interest of this country, he would have not taken the decisions that he’d taken in the manner and the direction that he has taken. So, he was tacit in making sure that he over endures political pressure on the heads in the SAPS and he targeted General Sibiya, knowing that perhaps General Sibiya, I would say he was already one foot in, one foot out. So, he knew his weaknesses and the vulnerabilities in the SAPS at that time, according to the situation was General Sibiya.”
