Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya
In just over two days after President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on a leave of absence, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has announced the suspension of his deputy and Crime Detection head, Shadrack Sibiya.
Lieutenant-General Sibiya and Minister Mchunu are implicated by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of collusion with criminals.
Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi revealed that Mchunu issued an instruction late in 2024 for the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team to be disbanded without notifying General Masemola.
On Sunday evening, President Ramaphosa responded to Mkhwanazi’s police corruption allegations. He announced the establishment of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to be chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice, Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
The President said the Commission will investigate allegations relating to the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated criminal justice system institutions by criminal syndicates.
