Gravesite of those murdered in the Marikana massacre
The widows whose husbands were killed in Marikana near Brits in the North West say they still find it difficult to heal from the occurrences of that day in 2012.
This is as the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) marks 13 years since police gunned down 34 mineworkers in Marikana.
Ten other people, including security and police officers, were killed days before 16 August 2012.
Neliswa Nopiki say more needs to be done to make things right. “Nothing has changed. I still feel the same pain as before. And I feel it more as time goes on. I haven’t healed.”
Another widow, Nandipha Yona says the government needs to step up, “The mine has done something. It has given us jobs, and it educates our children. I’m complaining about the government, because it has only compensated us for loss of life.”
