Marginal price decrease in fuel as increase in general levy kicks in

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is expected to announce its latest fuel price adjustment before midnight tomorrow.

According to preliminary reports by the Department’s Central Energy Fund, the price of petrol expected to come down in June by 19 cents and diesel by 50 cents per litre.

However, the fuel tax levy hikes recently announced by the National Treasury will see motorists enjoy a less decrease at the pump.

The announcement could be delayed after the Economic Freedom Fighter filed an urgent court bid to prevent Godongwana’s fuel levy hike to kick-in this Wednesday.

The court judgment on the matter is expected tomorrow.

Godongwana announced the general fuel levy hike to be implemented in June 2025 after the VAT increase was challenged and National Treasury had to find alternative ways to raise revenue.

At the same time, the Western Cape High Court is set to hear an urgent court application brought by the EFF on the general fuel levy increase on Tuesday.

The EFF filed its papers last week and argues that the implementation of the fuel levy increase will be economically harmful.
