Mapiyeye says he was threatened with hitman over disciplinary hearing

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard how Ekurhuleni Metro Police Chief, Jabulani Mapiyeye was threatened with a hitman, for insisting on a disciplinary hearing against his deputy Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi.

Brigadier Mkhwanazi has been implicated in the Madlanga Commission for his alleged close ties with alleged criminal cartel syndicate member, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

This as Mkhwanazi allegedly authorised blue lights to be fitted into Matlala’s private vehicles.

Chief Mapiyeye has testified that the then city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi threatened him and another deputy police chief Revo Spies with the name of the late taxi boss Jothan ‘Mswazi’ Msibi.

“Commissioner Spies was not with me, I was just with her when she told me that she has learned that it’s myself and Commissioner Spies who are persuading this matter of Julius Mkhwanazi. I even relayed this on the first day to Spies as well that I wanted him to take precautionary measures to where he was traveling,” says Mapiyeye.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Spokesperson for Community Safety in Ekurhuleni, Jaco Terblanche says Mkhwanazi is protected by city manager, Imogen Mashazi.

“She is the person protecting him. She was the one that did not do the disciplinary hearing against him and stopped the forensic investigation of the whistle blower. She is also the one who stated the allegations of sexual harassment against Isaac Mapiyeye, the actual chief of police and till today, his suspension has not been lifted yet, and she is the one who basically runs the African National Congress (ANC) caucus,” adds Tereblanche.
