Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe
President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe as acting Minister of Police with immediate effect.
Minister Mantashe will serve in this capacity until Professor Firoz Cachalia assumes the position of acting Minister of Police from 1 August 2025.
Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says that Mantashe will still retain his responsibilities as Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was placed on special leave after KwaZulu-Natal police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused him of being linked to notorious criminals who have now infiltrated law enforcement agencies.
Meanwhile, Mchunu will remain a Member of Parliament despite being placed on leave of absence by President Cyril Ramaphosa. This has been confirmed by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula who briefed the media today at the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg.
Mbalula says that Mchunu will still attend to all his Parliamentary duties.
“Ministers are Members of Parliament. So, he’s not suspended as a Member of Parliament. He’s a Member of Parliament, comrade Senzo. So, he belongs to Parliament. He will attend Parliament and all the duties that are expected of him to perform as a Member of Parliament,” says Mbalula.
