Ramaphosa made the comments early this week at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, while addressing over 40000 ANC councillors from across the country.

Mantashe was leading a campaign to address the high cost of living in the Dullah Omar Region, in Cape Town.

He says Ramaphosa was not referring to the quality of the work done by DA councillors.

“No, he was not talking about councillors. He talked about compliance and auditor of the councillor. We know that 60% of the DA councillors are having a clean audit. That is about compliance. That is about financial management. Only 8% of the councillors of our municipalities that we lead have a clean audit. That talks to our financial management. There is no shame in that. We must talk about it and try to improve on that and improve our performance,” says Mantashe.

The ANC is now focusing on improving its performance in the muncipalities where it is governing.

“The mistake that we must never do is to do a programme to prove that the DA is wrong. That is not the issue. The issue is to prove that the ANC is right. That is what we should be doing. Forget about the DA. Do the work as the ANC. We have 46 of them in Dullah Omar region.  With that army we can move mountains,” he adds.
