Mangaung Metro officials in the Free State say they will continue with the environmental health and safety operation at spaza shops throughout the festive season, to ensure consumers remain safe.

Counterfeit and illicit items were found on the shelves of some spaza shops. Spaza owners have until the end of February next year to be compliant with the law.

Mangaung Metro spokesperson Qondile Khedama, “This operation is an interdepartmental programme because we are involving people who are responsible for hawking, that is the LED of the city, the waste management directorate so it’s inter-departmental. What we are trying to do is to make sure that each programme of the department talks to the other. It is a critical thing you are raising about the parking because if parking is not enough in the CBD, we have to improvise.”
