A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to four life terms in the Fraserburg Regional Court for repeatedly raping his stepdaughter, who was 10 years old when the abuse began.
The Northern Cape man was convicted for crimes committed between 2017 and 2019. The court heard that he threatened to separate the child from her mother if she revealed the abuse. The victim became pregnant at age 13 as a result of the rape and abuse.
Provincial police spokesperson Ivan Magerman says the man served as a preacher in his church.
“The court heard that the accused began abusing the victim when she was only 10 years old. The abuse continued for several years, during which he threatened to separate the child from her mother if she revealed the crimes.”
He adds that the sentence reflects the severity of the crimes.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of these heinous crimes and serves as a strong deterrent to potential offenders. It also demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable children and ensuring that perpetrators of crimes against minors face the full consequences of the law.” – Reporting by Tebogo Msimanga
