A 36-year-old man is expected to appear before the Ganyesa Magistrate’s Court, near Vryburg in North West, on Monday. He allegedly stabbed his 28-year-old girlfriend to death last Thursday.

North West Police spokesperson Adele Myburgh says the suspect handed himself over to the police.

“According to information received, a 28-year-old female was allegedly stabbed to death. Then the 36-year-old boyfriend came to the police station to report the incident. He’s an Ethiopian citizen. According to the information received, he then left with the police to his house, where they seized a knife, suspected to have been used in the commission of this crime. This 36-year-old boyfriend will appear before the Ganyesa Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the 30th of December.”

Myburgh says Public Order Police were called in to patrol the area after some locals threatened foreign business owners.

“After this incident was reported, some of the community members were upset. About seven or eight of them were driving on a bakkie, and then they were driving to some foreign-owned shops, and they were intimidating them. These foreigners immediately closed their shops. The incident or matter was reported to the police, although there was no criminal case opened. Police have mobilised some of our public order policing members, that are currently busy patrolling the area, but there are no looting or other cases.”
