Rescue teams at a beach
A man has died in a drowning at the Glenashley Beach in Durban North.
In a statement, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says a man and a woman who are believed to be locals, were reportedly caught in the surf zone in heavy, rough sea conditions last night. The woman managed to get herself back to shore, uninjured.
The NSRI says three people who were at the beach rescued the man back to the shore. Despite efforts by one of the rescuers, who is reported to be a doctor, the man was declared dead at the scene.
On arrival on the scene paramedics continued with advanced life support resuscitation efforts and after all efforts at CPR were exhausted sadly the man was declared deceased.
The body of the man has been taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
The female was not injured. A Victim Support trauma counsellor assisted the surviving female who we believe is related to the deceased man.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
Meanwhile, the NSRI says four people have been rescued after their boat capsized offshore at Hermanus in the Western Cape.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says crews were activated following eyewitness reports of people in distress. He says the four males from Stellenbosch were going fishing when the incident occurred.
Lambinon says they had been in the water for about seven hours.
” On arrival on the scene, NSRI found a father, age 49, his son aged 17 and his two friends, clinging onto the upturned hull of the capsized small cabin ski-boat. All four were rescued onto the rescue craft where treatment for hypothermia was commenced as well as medical treatment for injuries sustained to the dad and to his son.”
